Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious health issue that can lead to many health problems and even death. A possible treatment is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT), which can improve the lives of those with SCD. But HCT is not easy; it can be physically and emotionally tough. This study wanted to know what young people and their parents thought about HCT after going through it for SCD.

The study talked to youth and young adults (YYAs) and their parents who had been through HCT. They found that being alone for a year was really hard. This is because HCT requires a lot of isolation to protect the patient's weakened immune system. The emotional toll was significant, with both patients and parents feeling anxious and scared.

One of the key findings was that the emotional support from family and friends was crucial. It helped the patients cope with the loneliness and fear. But the study also pointed out that there was a lack of psychosocial support for the families. This means that there weren't enough resources to help them deal with the emotional side of the transplant.

The study concluded that while HCT can improve the quality of life for those with SCD, it's also important to consider the emotional challenges. It suggests that more support should be offered to families going through this process.
