A Whale Watcher's 67-Day Ordeal at Sea

Mikhail Pichugin, a 45-year-old Russian whale watcher, recently shared the heart-wrenching details of his 67-day ordeal at sea. He was found drifting in an inflatable boat in the Sea of Okhotsk, near the Kamchatka peninsula. The boat carried the bodies of his brother, Sergey Pichugin, 49, and his nephew, Ilya, 15, who had died weeks earlier. Ilya reportedly died from starvation, while his father, Sergey, passed away from exhaustion after jumping into the frigid water. The trio had set out from the Shantar Islands on a multi-day whale-watching trip, but their vessel's engines failed, leaving them stranded. They attempted to paddle back but the oar broke, and they were left to drift.

Mikhail survived by drinking rainwater and wrapping himself in a thick camel wool sleeping bag at night. He attributes his survival to his initial overweight condition and his determination to return home to his family. Despite the harrowing experience, he remains optimistic, stating, "It was the Angel ship that saved me." Russian officials had searched for the group for a month before giving up. The vessel drifted over 625 miles before being spotted by a fishing trawler. Mikhail is currently recovering in a hospital in Magadan. However, he could face up to seven years in jail for violating Russian maritime safety laws.
