A South African Lawmaker Steps Down Amid Controversy
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former South African president Jacob Zuma, has stepped down from her parliamentary role. This decision follows serious allegations that she was involved in persuading 17 men to join Russia's war in Ukraine.
MK Party Responds
The Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, where Duduzile was a member, confirmed her resignation. They emphasized that the party had no involvement in recruiting the men and clarified that her resignation was not an admission of guilt. Instead, they pledged to support the families of the affected individuals.
Government and International Reactions
Duduzile remained silent at a recent press conference regarding the issue. Meanwhile, South Africa's government is actively working to repatriate the 17 citizens and is investigating how they ended up in Ukraine.
The situation has garnered international attention. Ukraine's foreign minister revealed that over 1,400 people from various African countries are fighting alongside Russian forces, raising concerns about recruitment tactics in the region.
Police Investigation
The police have launched an investigation into Duduzile after a formal complaint was filed by her half-sister. The complaint accuses her and two others of involvement in the recruitment process.
