A Beloved Spot Fades Away

Diridon Station in San Jose is about to lose a cherished landmark. McCarthy’s Newsstand, a tiny stand nestled in the corner of the historic train station, is closing its doors. Anne Zingale, who took over the business in 2022, received the news last month. The stand has operated on a short-term lease for years and will remain open until Tuesday, serving coffee, snacks, and train-themed souvenirs.

A Legacy Spanning Decades

The newsstand has been a fixture at the station for decades. It began with the McCarthy family in 1971, selling newspapers, books, and popcorn. Over time, the business evolved, now offering sodas, candy, and collectible pins. Zingale also assists travelers with directions and train schedules.

Changing Times at Diridon Station

The station has undergone many changes, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when fewer people used the station. Business was slowly recovering, but the newsstand, once a bustling spot, is now quieter. Zingale may continue selling collectible pins online.

Diridon Station is set to become a major transportation hub, with plans to add BART and high-speed rail. Zingale has seen the renderings and attended meetings but feels left out of the plans. A Caltrain spokesperson said they need to review the space before deciding what’s next.

Memories That Last

For many, the newsstand is more than just a shop—it’s a place of memories. Gabriel Gadzikowski, a Sunnyvale resident, recalls seeing people come and go. The comfy stools outside the stand are gone, but the memories remain. Though the newsstand may close, its impact on the station and its visitors will endure.
