A Sky‑High Canvas: Denver’s New Light‑Glowing Mountain Sculpture

Denver, Colorado, USA,Thursday, July 16, 2026

Mountains and Rivers Without End, a 145‑foot long sculpture by California sculptor Cliff Garten, has finally taken shape above the Denver Convention Center after more than five years of planning. The piece—costing roughly $1.8 million—rises 70 feet above the escalators and is visible from every floor of the building. When its internal lights activate at night, it shines bright enough to be spotted from Speer Boulevard.

Design & Materials

  • Translucent aluminum shell tracing a 120‑mile slice of the Rocky Mountains’ topography.
  • Blue glass channels hidden beneath, mimicking rivers winding through the terrain.
  • Light interaction creates a dynamic view that shifts with the sun and artificial illumination.

Installation Challenges

  • The convention center rarely remains empty long enough for a project of this scale.
  • Extensive engineering was required to safely hang the structure, adding extra time and complexity.

Despite these hurdles, the finished piece infuses the space with a sense of height and wonder, and many anticipate it will be visible in aerial shots during major sports broadcasts.

Funding & Context

  • Denver’s public art program, backed by a “1 percent for art” ordinance, funds about 400 works city‑wide.
  • Garten was selected after a panel of community members and artists reviewed proposals in 2020.
  • The new wing’s budget expanded from an initial $104 million estimate to $233 million, freeing funds for ambitious projects.
  • The sculpture sits opposite the famous blue bear on the building’s 14th‑street side, creating a balanced visual dialogue.

Looking Ahead

  • A grand opening is planned for an upcoming clear weekend.
  • City officials are considering future projects that might soften the space further.

The installation marks a bold addition to Denver’s skyline and reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to integrating art into public spaces.
