A Silent Spread of Measles in Delta County

Delta County, Colorado, USATuesday, June 2, 2026

Delta County now confronts a fresh measles case that underscores how the virus can spread unseen. The child, who never left Colorado and had no known links to other confirmed infections, likely caught it from an untested source. This lack of tracing leaves exposed people unaware of safety measures, giving measles more opportunities to jump from person to person.

Possible Exposure Sites

Health workers warn that two healthcare sites on Wednesday evening could have been points of contact:

  • Urgent Care – Stafford Lane
    Open from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

  • Emergency Department – Third Street
    Operated from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Because measles can remain airborne for up to two hours, a single infected visitor could have spread it at both locations.

Vaccination: The Best Defense

  • Two shots protect about 97 % of people.
  • An unvaccinated person can lower their risk if they receive the vaccine within three days of exposure.
  • An antibody treatment is available to reduce complications when given up to six days after contact.

Early Symptoms & Transmission

Early signs—fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes—appear before the characteristic rash. People can spread measles about four days before any visible symptoms, so they might unknowingly infect others. Anyone who feels sick after a potential exposure should call ahead before visiting a clinic, allowing staff to take precautions for other patients.

Current Situation

The infected child had only one dose of the vaccine; most kids receive their first shot at age one and a second before kindergarten. Colorado has already recorded 23 measles cases this year, a sharp rise from the usual two or fewer per year. Earlier in the season, several outbreaks were linked to schools in Broomfield.
