A Rare Meteorite Encounter Captured on Video
Marshfield, CanadaThursday, January 16, 2025
Velaidum's partner, Laura, suggested it might be a meteorite. Acting quickly, he collected some samples and sent them to Chris Herd, a meteorite expert from the University of Alberta. Herd confirmed they were chondrite, rocks from the Solar System's birth. This event is extraordinary because it's likely the first time a meteorite impact has been caught on video and audio.
Herd noted that the meteorite, traveling at over 60, 000 kilometers per hour, slowed to about 200 kilometers per hour before hitting the ground. Velaidum was lucky to have moved away just in time. This rare event adds a new dimension to studying meteorites.
