A New Monkeypox Case Hits California
California, USASunday, November 17, 2024
This isn't the first time monkeypox has been in the news. There's another strain, called clade II, that's been around since a big outbreak two years ago. Monkeypox is usually found in central and west Africa and is part of the same virus family as chickenpox and smallpox. It causes fever, chills, and a rash with lesions that look like smallpox.
Health officials are working hard to make sure no one else gets sick. They're contacting people who might have been exposed and reminding everyone to get tested if they have an unexplained rash, traveled to an affected country in the last month, or been close to someone with monkeypox.
