A New Entertainment Hub Takes Shape in Prince George’s County

National Harbor, Maryland, USAThursday, April 30, 2026
Maryland lawmakers recently passed a bill that opens the door for a cutting‑edge entertainment arena in Prince George’s County. The proposed venue, called Sphere Entertainment, would seat about 6, 000 people and could become the state’s second such complex after the one in Las Vegas. The plan calls for a smaller version of the Las Vegas model, featuring an LED wrap‑around screen and a massive interior display that could show 16K by 16K images. Inside, guests would experience immersive sound and touch‑sensitive seats that react to the performance. The new law redefines how tax funds can be used in the area, allowing the county to tap into Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for the project. County officials say that basic infrastructure—roads, water and sewer—is already in place, so the focus is on using public bonds rather than direct tax revenue.
Aisha Braveboy, the county executive, noted that the venue would spur economic growth and bring high‑skill jobs to the region. The bill also expands the definition of an “Extraordinary Development District, ” giving planners more flexibility to build and improve the entertainment zone. State legislators argue that the complex will boost tourism, arts and hospitality in Maryland. They believe the specialized technology required for Sphere demands unique financing arrangements, which the new law supports. The project is expected to create roughly 2, 500 jobs directly and support an additional 4, 750 through related services. Maryland’s government has pledged $13. 5 million toward the endeavor. If all approvals line up, the venue could open before 2030 and become a major attraction for visitors to National Harbor.
