A New Bus Brings Trips to All Kids
Cottage Grove’s Circle of Friends, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering children with severe disabilities, has secured over $170 000 from the federal government under Section 5310 to purchase a special school bus. The Lane Transit District Board approved the funding unanimously, underscoring robust community support for inclusive transportation.
The “Belonging Bus”
- Arrival: Fall 2027
- Capacity: Ten secure tie‑downs for wheelchairs and mobility devices
- Features: Ramps, lifts, and ample storage
Unlike typical buses that accommodate only one or two wheelchair seats, the Belonging Bus expands access to museums, science centers, and parks—places previously out of reach due to parking and accessibility challenges.
Impact on Students
- Expanded Learning: More students can attend outdoor science centers and community events.
- Reduced Physical Strain: Parents and caregivers no longer need to manually move wheelchairs into cars.
“A bus that can lift and secure everyone will make it easier for families and let teachers focus on teaching instead of transportation,” says Hannah Layman, mother of a 12‑year‑old wheelchair user.
Funding Journey
- Total Needed: $200 000
- Raised So Far: $170 000 (federal) + $20 000 (local foundation)
- Remaining: $30 000 to be raised through community fundraisers over the next year.
Future Plans
Circle of Friends aims to:
- Add mental‑health services
- Implement job‑training programs
- Expand after‑school activities
These initiatives are guided by a survey revealing gaps in support for kids with disabilities.
Vision
The new bus marks the first step toward building a network where children, parents, and staff feel fully supported and included. Their story demonstrates how targeted funding combined with local effort can open doors that were once closed.
