A New Asteroid on the Radar: Should We Worry?
Saturday, February 8, 2025
The Apollo 2024 YR4 measures between 131 and 295 feet. That’s about the size of a large building. Up in space, there are all sizes of asteroids.
Imagine what could happen if it hit Earth. 2008, a 30-meter-wide (98-foot-wide) asteroid struck the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia, flattening forests across 830 square miles (2, 150 square kilometers). The asteroid, which travelers noted on February 15, 2021.
Let's talk about what will be done to keep us safe. Two groups backed by the UN will share the info and figure out how to stop the asteroid. We've seen this before in the past with the Tunguska event and more.
Mitigation, like deflecting the asteroid, could be an option. But the main thing is to keep watching and collecting data. More data means less chance of an impact.
So yeah, right now, scientists are not all that worried about 2024 YR4. The plan is to keep a close eye on the space rock. Let's hope new tech and more research will reduce any chances to improve the data.
