A Legacy of Service

The Highland Local Schools District Board of Education recently celebrated the retirement of Robert Kelly, a long-serving board member. Kelly's journey in public service began long before his time on the school board. He started as a Granger Township trustee and later served on the Medina County Board of Education. His family has deep roots in education, with his father, William, being a founding member of the Highland Foundation and serving on the school board from 1960 to 1971.

28 Years of Dedication

Kelly's tenure on the school board spanned an impressive 28 years, during which he played a pivotal role in significant projects. These included the construction of Highland High School and the three elementary schools, as well as navigating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Superintendent Catherine Aukerman honored Kelly with the district's first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his outstanding leadership and dedication.

An Emotional Farewell

The emotional farewell was marked by heartfelt speeches and a video message from former board member Norman Christopher. Kelly expressed his love for the district and gratitude for the support he received throughout his service. Board President Chris Wolny praised Kelly's leadership, noting the stability he brought to the board over the years.

Continuing the Legacy

In addition to honoring Kelly, the board accepted a generous donation of $14,000 from the William and Ruth Kelly Family Foundation. This donation will support the William and Ruth Kelly Scholarship Fund, continuing the legacy of giving back to the community.

Grants and Donations

The Highland Foundation also made a significant impact by providing $9,050 in grants. These funds will bring performances from the Magical Theatre Company to all three elementary schools and revive a spring symposium career exploration program for Highland High School students.

The board also addressed several administrative matters, including:

  • Approving donations to the middle school and the boys' golf team
  • Hiring long-term substitutes
  • Approving retirements and supplemental contracts

Next Meeting

The next board meeting is scheduled for January 12 at 6 p.m. in the media center at Highland High School.
