A late start for the 2027 school year in Anne Arundel
Balancing holidays, extended breaks, and a full academic year
A New School Year Timeline
In a move set to reshape the academic calendar, Anne Arundel County Public Schools will delay the start of the 2027-2028 school year until August 30, 2027. The decision follows a unanimous vote by the school board, aimed at maximizing instructional days by avoiding closures when holidays fall on weekends.
Why the Late Start?
Traditional late-August start dates often clash with holidays like Rosh Hashana and Eid al-Fitr, which in 2027 will land on weekends. By pushing back the first day of school, officials ensure that no additional days are lost to religious observances, preserving valuable teaching time.
Longer Breaks, Fewer Early Releases
The updated schedule introduces extended breaks to give students and staff more respite:
- Thanksgiving Break: 5 days
- Winter Break: 6 days
- Spring Break: 6 days
While early dismissals are rare, the calendar includes four "unity days" per quarter—days when schools close early so students can wear orange and participate in anti-bullying initiatives.
The Big Question: Will Summer Feel Shorter?
With the school year now ending on June 14, 2028, families face a compressed summer. The late August start means an extra week of vacation in August, raising questions:
- Will students benefit from a gentler transition into learning?
- Or will the shift make summer feel abruptly cut short?
Only time will tell how the new schedule reshapes family plans and student readiness.
