A Famous Polish Eatery in Niles is Shutting Down
A Legacy Spanning Decades
A well-known landmark in Niles, the White Eagle Events and Convention Center, will bid its final farewell at the end of this year. This iconic venue has hosted big names like a pope, a president, and famous stars.
- 1947: The journey began in Chicago.
- 1967: The venue relocated to Milwaukee Avenue.
A Polish Community Staple
The White Eagle was a cornerstone of the Polish community, renowned for its mushroom-barley soup. It also served as a go-to spot for funeral gatherings, situated right across from a Polish cemetery.
- 1992: Ted Przybylo's six kids took over after his passing.
- 2015: Sold to Mario Ferraro, whose family has run Victoria Banquets since 1937.
A Venue for the Elite
With a capacity of 1,500 people, the White Eagle hosted some of the most influential figures, including:
- President Jimmy Carter
- Pope John II
- Muhammad Ali
It was also a hotspot for political fundraisers. A 1989 Sun-Times article dubbed it "the gatehouse to today's Polonia," highlighting its deep ties to Poland.
The Future of Victoria Banquets
Victoria Banquets continues to operate two other venues:
- Victoria in the Park in Mt. Prospect
- Mission Hills Club in Northbrook
These locations focus on weddings but also cater to corporate events and charity fundraisers.
