A Cruise Ship Outbreak: What We Know About Hantavirus
New Mexico, Albuquerque, USAMonday, May 4, 2026
Although rare, the virus can jump from person to person. In the United States, most cases are reported in western states such as New Mexico and Arizona, where rural living increases the chance of mouse encounters.
Symptoms start with flu‑like signs: fever, chills, muscle aches and sometimes a headache. Within one to eight weeks after exposure, the disease can develop into severe lung trouble with fluid buildup in the chest. A different form of hantavirus causes a fever and kidney failure within a week or two after contact.
The fatality rate varies: nearly 40% of those with lung syndrome die, while the kidney‑related form has a death rate between 1% and 15%.
There is no specific cure, but early medical care improves survival chances. Researchers still question why some people experience mild illness while others suffer severe outcomes, and they are studying long‑term patient data for clues.
Preventing infection involves staying away from rodents, using gloves and bleach to clean droppings, and avoiding sweeping or vacuuming that can stir the virus into the air.
