A Close Call: Democrat Derek Tran Unseats GOP’s Michelle Steel in California

Derek Tran, an Army veteran and first-time candidate, has won a tight race for a House seat in California's 45th District, securing his position against incumbent Republican Michelle Steel. This flip represents a rare leftward shift in a state that has generally inclining toward the right. Tran's success can be attributed to his strong performance in Los Angeles County, although the contest was notably close in Orange County. A significant factor in this race was the candidates' engagement with the area's Asian American community, particularly the Vietnamese electorate. Both contenders emphasized their personal histories and connections to the community. Steel, who previously served on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, is a Korean American immigrant. Tran, meanwhile, is the son of Vietnamese refugees and the newcomer to the political arena.

Anti-communist and anti-China rhetoric played a major role in the campaign. Both candidates aimed to appeal to the Vietnamese community, many of whom have personally experienced fleeing communism. This focus divided the Asian American community, with some critics suggesting it distracted from the candidates' actual policy platforms. Steel faced criticism for suggesting she was "more Vietnamese" than Tran, while Tran denounced such statements. The campaign saw accusations of “red-baiting” and attempts to link opponents to communist ties. Despite these divisive tactics, Tran emerged victorious, marking a shift in how candidates may need to approach younger voters who are less swayed by anti-communist rhetoric. Elsewhere in the state, voters demonstrated a shift toward more conservative crime policies. Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks secured her re-election in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District by a narrow margin.
