A Close Call: Democrat Derek Tran Unseats GOP’s Michelle Steel in California
California, USAThursday, November 28, 2024
Anti-communist and anti-China rhetoric played a major role in the campaign. Both candidates aimed to appeal to the Vietnamese community, many of whom have personally experienced fleeing communism. This focus divided the Asian American community, with some critics suggesting it distracted from the candidates' actual policy platforms.
Steel faced criticism for suggesting she was "more Vietnamese" than Tran, while Tran denounced such statements. The campaign saw accusations of “red-baiting” and attempts to link opponents to communist ties. Despite these divisive tactics, Tran emerged victorious, marking a shift in how candidates may need to approach younger voters who are less swayed by anti-communist rhetoric.
Elsewhere in the state, voters demonstrated a shift toward more conservative crime policies. Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks secured her re-election in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District by a narrow margin.
