A Blast from the Past: Missouri Man Arrested 31 Years After Brutal Murder of Indianapolis Woman
Indianapolis, Indiana, USASunday, September 15, 2024
The violent nature of the crime is starkly portrayed through the devastating impact it had on Van Huss' family, particularly her father. "She was raped and stabbed over 60 times and my dad had to see her like that, blood everywhere, blood on walls, his daughter was naked, laying there … he had to see that. That changed him forever," said Van Huss' brother, Jimmy.
DNA evidence was found on Van Huss' body, as well as blood on a paper bag in her apartment. In 2018, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department submitted a sample of this DNA to a specialty company. Last year, detectives used the company's genetic genealogy analysis to identify Shepherd as a suspect.
What if DNA technology hadn't advanced as quickly as it has? Would Van Huss' case have remained unsolved, leaving her family without justice?
Shepherd is being held without bond at Missouri's Boone County Jail, with an extradition hearing scheduled in the coming days.
