What are the odds of an asteroid hitting Earth in 2032?  NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has been keeping tabs on asteroid 2024 YR4, initially detected on December 27, 2024.  The odds of a collision have shifted from 1. 3% to 2. 2%, as of February 10.         It's important to note that the risk level is still relatively low.  Asteroid 2024 YR4 measures between 130 and 300 feet wide, which is not large enough to cause a global threat.          If we look at history, NASA's predictions have a track record of improving over time.  For example, the asteroid Apophis, initially thought to have a 2. 7% chance of hitting Earth in 2029, now poses no threat.  The odds of impact for 2024 YR4 will likely decrease as more data is gathered.

         There are seven potential impact dates between 2032 and 2074.  The most likely impact date is December 22, 2032.  This date qualifies as a Torino 3 level risk, meaning there is a 1% or greater chance of localized destruction.  But remember, this is preliminary and subject to change.

        Astronomers will continue to observe asteroid 2024 YR4 during its flybys.  These observations will help refine measurements of its speed, spin, mass, and dimensions.  The next close approach will be in December 2028.  By then, more accurate estimates of its trajectory and chances of impact can be made.
